Thrissur: A farmer who had bagged many state and national-level honours for his contribution in agricultural sector died after a tree fell on him. Thrissur Pattikkad native Ciby Kallingal (49) died in the mishap. He is the winner of the state government’s Karshakothama Award in 2017 and Jagjivan Ram Innovative Farmer Award in 2018.
In the heavy rain and wind, a tree fell on Ciby and his friend Tomy when they were standing in the cardamom plantation near Nariyambara. Though they were rushed to a private hospital in Kattappana, Ciby’s life could not be saved.
Ciby is the first Malayali to win Jagjivan Ram Innovative Farmer Award. He has also bagged National Plant Genome Saviour Award of the central government, Mixed Crop Fest Farmer Award of the NABARD for the best farmer in Thrissur and many other honours.
A graduate, Ciby became a farmer following his father Varghese Kallingal. The 20-acre land owned by Ciby is full of various fruit trees, chicken, pet fowls, horses, cattle, fish and other crops. He had also developed 12 different varieties of nutmeg.
Ciby followed organic farming method. Many students, research fellows and foreigners used to visit his farm. Ciby is survived by wife Swapna and children Tania and Tarun.
