Pathanamthitta: The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has announced that auto rickshaws and goods carriers will not be allowed for Sabarimala pilgrimage. Those who are travelling to the Ayappa temple in bikes without helmets will be fined.

The auto rickshaws have permits inside the district and 20 kilometres from the district boundary. Most people who reach Sabarimala in auto rickshaws are from Attingal and Nedumangad.

The officials will stop devotees coming in tempos and lorries as well. The MVD is likely to arrange transportation for them. As many as 20 squads will operate 24 hours within 400 kilometres of the temple under the safe zone project.

The safe zone project includes breakdown service, accident rescue service, traffic maintenance, a quick response team that will reach an accident spot within seven minutes, free crane service and free ambulance service.
