Anganwadi in Onpathaekkar region in Upputhara, Idukki

Idukki: The Social justice department and panchayat have turned a blind eye to the basic infrastructural need of an anganwadi at Onpathaekkar region in Upputhara here. This anganwadi has been functioning at a local person’s house for the last 5 years. It is learnt that the monthly rent of Rs 500 to the house owner is not paid for the last 6 months.

Earlier, the anganwadi was functioning in its own building. But, the walls developed cracks and the building was on shaky grounds. Later, the social justice department revoked the operational permit to this anganwadi. Following this, the operation of the anganwadi was shifted to a room in the house owned by Podimattathil Varkey.

The land owned by anganwadi has been abandoned for 5 years. Panchayat maintained that Rs 7 lakh has been allocated to construct a new building for the anganwadi. But it is learnt that the administration and officials of the Integrated Child Development Scheme are lackadaisical.

Earlier, around 32 children enrolled in this anganwadi in a year. But due to lack of amenities, only nine children are studying here at present. The distribution of nutritional products to pregnant women and teenagers too is disrupted.
