Authorities shut Kannur–Kasaragod borders with no warning; people in distress
Payyannur: In the wake of increasing Covid cases, stricter restrictions have been placed in Kasaragod district. The Kannur – Kasaragod borders in Payyannur, Peringom and Cherupuzha were closed.
On Friday morning, Kannur district police chief instructed the police stations to close the border areas. But this was not informed to revenue authorities.
Since morning, traffic was allowed only through Kalikkadavu. The Kara – Talichalam bridge and Thattarkkadavu bridge were completely closed. Though Olavara bridge was also closed, it was later opened as demanded by tehsildar K Balagopal who was also stopped here. He said that no warning was given ahead of closing the borders.
In Karivelloor, apart from the national highway, all small roads were closed.
Even the health and essential service workers were stopped in Olavara. Following this a large number of vehicles queued up resulting in traffic congestion. As the borders were closed with no prior notice, scuffle took place between commuters and police.
