Attukal Pongala on Feb 27, ritual to start at 10.50 am
Thiruvananthapuram: Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, lakhs of devotees will celebrate the auspicious Attukal Pongala on February 27, Saturday. Compared to the previous years, this time the devotees will perform the ritual by themselves due to the restrictions as per COVID protocol.
Pongala will be offered only on the main traditional hearth set up at the temple here.
The tantri of the temple will hand over the light to the chief priest from the sanctum sanctorum to light up the hearth at 10.50 am on Saturday. After the Pongala ritual, Nivedhyam and offerings at noon will be carried out at 3.40 pm.
This year, none would be allowed to offer 'Pongala' (sweet offering) in public places or on roads. But people can make the offering from their homes. Devotees will be allowed to enter the temple as per the COVID protocol.
The ‘Ezhunellippu’ ceremony will be carried out with mandatory rituals. The ‘Ezhnellippu’ procession will return to the temple around 11.30 pm. No offerings will be received midway to the temple.
Girls belonging to the 10 to 12 age group will be allowed to participate in the ‘Thalapoli’.
The temople trust authority reported that a boy for ‘Kuthiyottam’ will accompany the ‘Ezhunellippu’ procession.
Preparing 'pongala' is considered an auspicious ritual of the annual festival of the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple.
