Thiruvananthapuram: The story shared by a delegate of the Loka Kerala Sabha brought tears to the listeners. Elizabeth, who worked as a house maid in the gulf for the past 31 years, said she even had to eat from the trash once during her life abroad.
"I have been a house maid since the age of eight. I was married off when I was 18 to a mentally challenged man. After giving birth to two children, I left for Qatar seeking a job. Housemaid job requires 24*7 availability. I was denied payment despite doing the works. I was physically assaulted and left unattended when I suffered illness. I ate from the trash once as I was denied food. I had to seek help of the Embassy to escape from the torture," said tearful Elizabeth.
People ask me how many bank accounts I have. My only achievement is marrying off my two girls, she added.

Sharing her story, ministers P Rajeev and Veena George said that the Loka Kerala Sabha is the voice of people like Elizabeth. "Loka Kerala Sabha does not share only the success stories. This is also a part of it," said Veena.
“Loka Kerala Sabha is not just about bringing investments to the states. We need the involvement of the expatriates and also to listen to their ideas,” chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan had said earlier.
