Kochi: Aswin had confronted several ordeals in life which might seem impossible to overcome when he is a high school student now. He is the only breadwinner of a big family, who has no one to rely upon after the demise of his father.
Aswin’s day begins very early by repairing motor pumps. After 8 am, he rushes to school and again returns to work once he reaches home by evening. His small house with cracked walls and roof is located on a two-cent land in Madathil Parambu lane in Ernakulam North St Vincent road. If it rains, water stagnates both inside and outside the house.
Aswin’s father Vinod passed away in June this year. He was running a repair shop of grease pumps, car wash pressure pumps and compressors. Aswin learned the job by assisting his father. Vinod had to work from home during the period of lockdown. Even after the death of Vinod, people arrived at their house to repair pumps, unaware of the death news. This urged Aswin to take up his father’s job.
Vinod’s brother Vinay had died in 2017 and Vinay’s family is also living in the same house. The family consists of eight members, including five children and their old grandmother Prema. Vinod had availed many loans for meeting the needs of the family, which he could repay until the period of pandemic. Many credits are still left to pay back. A loan worth Rs 9 lakh is also pending to be paid.
