Thiruvananthapuram: The bill to remove the governor as the Chancellor of universities would be tabled in the Kerala Assembly on Wednesday.
The draft Bill to replace the governor as Chancellor of the universities in the state was approved on November 30, in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
According to a statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office, the draft Bill provides that the government would have the power to remove the appointed Chancellor from office on the basis of an inquiry conducted by a former judge of the Supreme Court or High Court in case of serious allegations of misconduct against him or her.
Governor Arif Mohammed Khan has approved tabling of the Kerala General Sales Tax (Amendment) Bill which aims to increase by four per cent the Kerala GST on foreign liquor to make up for the loss of revenue due to exemption of the five per cent turnover tax levied on distilleries making and selling foreign liquor in the State. The sales tax on liquor will touch 251 per cent with the proposed hike.
The advisory committee has proposed adjourning of the Assembly session on December 13. The session was scheduled till December 15. The decision to adjourn the session early was taken as several of the members would be travelling to Qatar to watch the final matches of the FIFA World Cup.
