Assembly protest was against ‘corrupt govt’ not KM Mani: Kerala tells SC
New Delhi: The Kerala government changed its stance that KM Mani is ‘corrupt’. The protest in Assembly in 2015 was against the Oommen Chandy government, said the government pleader in the Supreme Court on Thursday.
In a major embarrassment to the LDF ally Kerala Congress (Mani), senior lawyer Ranjith Kumar had argued on July 5 that Mani is corrupt and the protest was against the corrupt finance minister presenting the budget.
The bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud continue to hear the appeal of the government against the rejection of its application to withdraw the case from the Kerala High Court.
The government argued that the Assembly will take care of the events happening on its premises. While accepting the freedom of expression of the legislators, Justice Chandrachud asked if someone empties a revolver in the Assembly then will the system leave it to the Assembly.
LDF convener A Vijayaraghavan had earlier said that Mani’s name was not mentioned in the protest and the lawyer did not say Mani is corrupt. Protest was against the corrupt government. That is what we told the SC too, he said.
