Irikkur (Kannur): As K C Joseph made it clear that he was not contesting the Assembly polls, discussions have heated up regarding the next possible candidate in Irikkur, the UDF stronghold in Kannur. Politicians in Kannur are eagerly waiting to know who will replace the veteran MLA, who held the post for 40 years.

As per reports, KPCC general secretary Adv Sony Sebastian has high chances of being fielded in Irikkur. The news has been confirmed by unofficial sources in the party. Sony Sebastian also did not deny reports in this regard. He told Mathrubhumi.com that he is likely to be considered for the seat as it was previously held by the A group.

"Irikkur is a stronghold of UDF. If I contested the polls, I would get the same support as K C Joseph. There is not even the slightest chance of UDF losing the seat," Sony said. UDF considers that there is no other party leader than Sony Sebastian who can replace K C Joseph in Irikkur.

Sony Sebastian was the state level office-bearer of KSU and Youth Congress. Currently, he is serving as a KPCC general secretary and chairman of Marketfed. Earlier, he had served as president of Taliparamba Agricultural Development Bank and national president of Rubber Growers' Cooperative Society.

There were reports that KPCC general secretary Sajeev Joseph and UDF district chairman P T Mathew were being considered for Irikkur constituency. However, the final hints suggest that Sony Sebastian has higher chance of securing the seat.

Irikkur became a UDF stronghold after the delimitation of the constituency in 1976. UDF failed in the seat only in 1980. Later, K C Joseph was elected from there for 8 terms in a row since 1982. In 2016, K C Joseph defeated CPI candidate K T Joseph for a majority of over 9,600 votes.
