Congress to move legally against Governor for not fulfilling duties as Chancellor

Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress has strongly opposed the stand taken by Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on the university issue. Opposition leader VD Satheesan said that the Congress has made it clear that it will move legally against the governor for not fulfilling the duties as a chancellor.

It is illegal not to accept the High Court notice. The governor was talking in a childish manner instead of completing the legal proceedings. His decision not to take over the responsibilities as a chancellor is illegal, VD Satheesan said in Kochi.

The Governor is the person legally obliged to assume the office of Chancellor. He is currently the Chancellor according to the law passed by the assembly. The governor has no authority to say that he will not assume that position, Satheesan added.

Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala also said that the governor’s decision to stay away from the post of chancellor will adversely affect the independent and transparent functioning of the universities.

The Governor should be prepared to correct his mistake in the appointment of Kannur VC. His decision not to continue as chancellor would only serve to justify the appointment of a vice-chancellor, Chennithala stated.
