Anti-Muslim remarks during Holy Mass: Kuravilangad nuns walk out to mark protest against priest
Kottayam: A group of nuns has protested against a priest for allegedly making anti-muslim remarks during Sunday Holy Mass at Kuravilangad convent in Kottayam. Alphy, Nina Rose, Ancitta, Anupama, and Josephine are the nuns who have staged a walkout from the holy mass here on Sunday. This comes at a time amid the controversy over Pala Bishop Mar Joseph Kallarangatt’s Narcotic Jihad remark.
Addressing the media, the nuns opened up that they staged a walkout after questioning the anti-muslim remark of the priest.
During Sunday Holy Mass, the priest alleged that some people are using chemicals to make Christians infertile. He used to make offensive remarks against the Muslim community. Recently, he made similar statements related to ‘Eesho’ film, informed the nuns.
" Only 4 inmates and 12 nuns participated in the holy mass. When he started making communal remarks, we told him that such statements should be avoided. Protesting against the priest, we walked out from the chapel," said Sr Anupama.
Pinpointing ‘Christ never taught us to profess communalism’, the nuns said that they reacted when the priest acted against this morale.
The priest also made statements based on Pala Bishop’s controversial remarks.
The nuns also clarified that they never back the remarks of Pala Bishop either. Kuravilangad nuns said that they have interacted with many Muslims and did not have any bad experiences.
Kuravilangad nuns earlier have come to the public as whistleblowers against rape accused Bishop Franco Mulackkal, demanding his arrest. They also received international recognition for their endurance in bringing out the hidden face of the church authorities.
