Thiruvananthapuram: A help desk has been launched at the opposition leader’s office to provide free legal aid for the women facing mental and physical abuses in connection with dowry. The help desk has been organised as a part of the second phase of the campaign ‘Makalkkopam’.
The help desk was inaugurated by opposition leader V D Satheesan, former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and playback singer Aparna Rajeev. The toll free number to call to the help desk is 1800 425 1801. A team of 87 lawyers have been organised to take up the complaints received through the help desk.
By considering the current state of the society in which many suicides happen as a consequence of domestic violence, V D Satheesan stated that the society should enlighten women that divorce is better than suicide. He contempted the acts of giving and receiving dowry and also asked people to vow against it.
