Alfiya wins Para Powerlifting Championship through sheer determination

Alfiya won the first position in the 50 kg weightlifting category at the 5th Kerala State Para Powerlifting Championship that was held at Alappuzha on Saturday.

Alappuzha: ‘Always think positive. If you set your heart on something, work hard for it and you will earn it. That is my motto. I have strived for it all my life,’ says Alfiya James.

Alfiya won the first prize in the 50 kilogram category of weightlifting at the 5th Kerala State Para Powerlifting Championship held at Alappuzha on Saturday. She is preparing for the National Wheelchair Badminton that will take place in Odisha on December 23.

Alfiya is a second-year BCom student. She was active in sports and games till she was in Plus One. She was also a national youth basketball player. An accident that happened while she was staying at hostel changed her life completely. She slipped and fell from the second floor of the hostel and sustained spinal injuries.

But she refused to stay cooped up in her room. She worked hard to strengthen her body and her mind. She has now become a para powerlifting champion. Alfiya is also a champion in wheelchair basketball and badminton.

Alfiya is the daughter of Muvattupuzha native James and Biji. Alfiya’s father passed away when she was just 7 years old. Her mother works as a nurse. Her brother Alfin is a Plus Two student.
