Alappuzha farmer kills self over delay in payment of procured paddy price

Ambalapuzha: A farmer, who had been in financial crisis due to delay in payment of procured paddy price, committed suicide on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as KR Rajappan (88), a native of Ambalapuzha, Alappuzha. He was found dead after consuming poison at his house.

Rajappan and his son Prakashan had been cultivating paddy in a three-acre plot for the past several years. After the harvest, their paddy was procured on April 28. On May 6, they received the Paddy Receipt Sheet (PRS).

As per reports, Rajappan and Prakashan were to be paid a total amount of Rs 1,02,045 and Rs 55,054, respectively. Ahead of Onam, Rajappan had received Rs 28,243 in his account, whereas Rs 15,163 was paid to Prakashan. Ever since then, Rajappan had reportedly been distraught over the delay in the rest of the payment.

Rajappan is survived by his wife Rukmini, children Prakashan, Subhadra and Sulochana.
