Thiruvananthapuram: The government has decided to stop sea washing as part of the mineral sand mining in Alappad. However, the protest committee said that they will go ahead with the protest.

Sea washing will be stopped for one month till the expert committee submits its report. However, the inland washing will continue.

The sea wall in Alappad will be strengthened, minister for industries EP Jayarajan told reporters after the meeting with members of the protest committee here on Thursday.

However, the Alappad protest committee said that they will continue the protest. Stating that they will continue to protest the sand mining unto death, protest committee members alleged that the mining industry was more valuable for the government than the people of Alappad.

Minister Jayarajan had asked the protest committee to withdraw the strike as the government decided to stop sea washing, which was one of the major demands of the locals. However, the protesters rejected the minister’s demand.
