Accused Jithin arrested over AKG Centre attack

Thiruvananthapuram: Crime Branch here on Thursday nabbed the suspect in the AKG centre attack case. The accused was identified as Youth Congress leader Jithin, a native of Manvila here.

He is the president of Attipra Youth Congress constituency committee.

The Crime Branch officials have been interrogating the accused at Kavadiyar here.

A senior Crime Branch officer told PTI that the suspect had allegedly carried out the attack in retaliation to the vandalism of KPCC offices.

The officer said that the suspect was identified via scientific evidence, including CCTV visuals of the incident.

The probe team nabbed the suspect after two-month-long investigation in the controversial case.

A bomb was hurled at AKG centre, state headquarters of CPM on June 30 around 11.30 pm. The CCTV visuals showed a man reaching the spot on a two-wheeler and hurling the explosives at the AKG centre. Crime Branch took over the probe into the case after the local police failed to identify the accused.

A case was registered with the Cantonment police station on July 1 in this regard under Section 436 of the Indian Penal Code (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, etc.) and Section 3(a) of the Explosive Substances Act (causing explosion likely to endanger life or property).
