Alappuzha: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) said that former CPM activist Akash Thillankeri, who was disowned by the party over alleged links with quotation gangs, being presented a trophy was a mere coincidence.
“Giving the trophy to Akash Thillankeri was a mere coincidence. It was given as part of congratulating the winners of the district kalolsavam. That is how Akash Thillankeri, who was part of the club that won the cricket match, received the trophy. Nothing was planned,” said DYFI state secretary VK Sanoj.
DYFI leader M Shajar had presented the trophy to Akash at the anniversary celebrations of CKG club in Thillankeri. In a picture that had surfaced on social media, the DYFI leader was seen presenting the trophy to Akash in Vanjeri.
Akash is the manager of CKG club’s cricket team that won the Thillankeri Premier Cricket tournament.
Two years ago, Shajar ridiculed Thillankeri and others against drug-quotation gangs in the area during a public meeting as part of DYFI district committees' drive. The speech escalated into a war-of-words between Thillankeri and DYFI on social media.
Meanwhile, CPM Thillankeri local committee called for an inquiry to examine the recent development.
