Air India, Jet, Indigo to operate services from Kannur airport
Kannur: The government has initiated procedures to make Kannur International Airport commercially functional and discussions with airline companies which are ready to operate services from the airport have begun.
Presently Air India, Jet Airways and Indigo Airlines have expressed their willingness to operate from the airport.
It is estimated that the airport will be fully ready for operations by March 2017. The government has initiated procedures to get the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) license.
Measures have also been taken to make arrangements for getting the services of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, Customs, Emigration, Airport Authority and Meteorological Department.
The DGCA license can be secured only after the services of the aforesaid agencies have been obtained. By 2017 January, facilities will be ready for all the agencies to operate in the airport.
The width of roads to the airport will be increased. Government approval has been received to increase the width of three of these roads. These roads are from Vayanthodi, Anjarakkandy and Pazhassi Canal regions. The roads are Wayanad to Mattanur, Dharmashala-Chalode-Mattanur and Kannur-Mattanur roads. A project of Rs 45 crore has been prepared for increasing the width of these three roads. All the roads are two-lane. The greenfield road to the airport is four-lane. However, the government is yet to take a decision regarding the construction of this road.
The measures are being delayed as the budget has not made any special mention about connecting roads to the airport. The budget says that the roads to the airport will be completed as one package. A project has to be prepared for this purpose. The budget had proclaimed that Koduvally-Pinarayi- Anjarakkandy-Mattanur four-lane will be constructed. The DPR for this purpose will be made soon.
T. Tulasidas. who assumed charge as Kannur International Airport (KIAL) MD, called a special meeting in Kannur the other day to evaluate the progress.
The decision to initiate procedures to make runway 4000 mts has been taken. The government will be informed to acquire 150 acres of land on an emergency basis. If the runway has to be increased to 3400 mts, 68 acres of land have to be acquired. If the government decision is to make runway 4000 mts, the KIAL demand is that the government should give approval to acquire 150 acres.
