Thiruvananthapuram: General education minister V Sivankutty stated that parents should ensure their children's safety instead of raising unnecessary concerns about AI-driven surveillance cameras in Kerala.
The minister's remark came in the wake of concerns about fines for using two-wheelers to ferry more than two, including children, at a time. Parents use two-wheelers to take their children to school. With AI cameras, the government aims to avoid traffic violations and ensure passenger safety. Children will have to wear a helmet and more than one pillion rider will not be allowed.
"The parents are liable to follow traffic rules. There is no need to ferry children in two-wheelers by hiding them," he said. He also stressed the importance of helmets and asked parents to ensure children wear them. He also said that schools would provide facilities to keep helmets secure.
"The Motor Vehicle Act was enacted during Rajiv Gandhi's tenure as Prime Minister. It is impossible to ignore the act. Only recently did we receive the direction to implement them strictly. The rules are precautions to avoid people losing lives in the accidents," he said.
He added that it was not possible to disregard the act for temporary relief. He pointed out that the government would monitor whether more than a permissible number of children are travelling on school buses.
