Agent offers medical seat abroad, swindles Rs 9.5 lakh from family
Kozhikode: A family hailing from Eranhipalam here has been swindled of Rs 9.5 lakh by a company and its agent who promised a medical seat for their daughter in a foreign university. The agent had received Rs 9.5 lakh from the family in two installments and refused to refund it when they realised the fraud and sought it back.
Eranhipalam native Krishnankutty and his wife Sabitha had sent their daughter Pooja abroad for studying medicine with a lot of hope for a bright future. An agent convinced them that if she becomes a doctor their social status will be changed and that the medical degree from foreign institution were more valuable than that from India.
The family sold their house and property and handed over Rs 9.5 lakh to the agent. But the agent of a company named ‘SAAC Education’ located at PK Towers in Puthiyara, cheated the family by arranging a seat in a University in Ukraine which is not recognised in India.
First the company offered to land the girl a medical seat at Xinjiang University in China and collected Rs 3.5 lakh from the family. Later, they informed that the seat could not be arranged and offered a seat in Donetsk National Medical University of Ukraine.
For this, the company received Rs 6 lakh more from the girl’s parents. Though the company had promised to return Rs 3.5 lakh received earleir for the seat in the Chinese university, nothing was returned to the family.
Pooja reached Ukraine on September 23, 2018. Only after two months did she came to know that the university was banned by the Indian Embassy, her parents said. Also she was expelled by the university claiming that she will be imprisoned if she continues to study there without permission.
Following this, the girl and her parents demanded the company to give the money back. However, the company and agent refused to return their money and also threatened them.
Pooja later came back to Kerala with the help of Malayali students in Ukraine and also managed to get admission in another university in Ukraine. But she need to get back the amount taken by the agent, to meet her educational expenses.
The family has lodged a complaint with Nadakkavu police and the City Police Commissioner seeking action against the agent and the company.
Krishnankutty is a GD postman (Gramin Dak Sevak) and his meagre salary is the sole income of the family. This amount is not sufficient for supporting their daughter with her studies. Their only hope is the helping hands from others.
