Pathanamthitta: Cracks have appeared on the Kanamala bridge located on Erumeli-Pampa road, one of the key route leading to Sabarimala.

Apart from cracks at different spots, the concrete layers of the bridge have peeled off.

A pit has been formed at the middle of the 700-metre-long bridge.

Stating that the condition of bridge is deteriorating when heavy vehicles pass through it, the local residents wanted the officials to regulate vehicular traffic.

The construction of bridge across Pampa river was completed by Kerala Construction Corporation two years ago at an outlay of Rs 7.6 crore.

At present, a large number of pilgrims to Sabarimala are using the bridge. The incident came to light after local residents informed Mathrubhumi news team.

The bridge, situated between Poonjar and Ranni constituencies, was opened during the pilgrim season in 2014.

The old bridge at this spot used to remain submerged during the rainy season. Accordingly, the locals had raised demand for a new bridge and their wish was fulfilled after 20 years.

The locals say faulty construction resulted in its present situation.
