After ED, Customs to interrogate minister KT Jaleel
Kochi: In connection with the probe into the gold smuggling case, Commissionerate of Customs (Preventive) in Kochi will interrogate minister KT Jaleel. On Friday, Enforcement Directorate also questioned the minister as part of the probe into the case.
According to reports, the customs officials will record his statement as per the customs act 108 over the diplomatic baggage. It is learned that customs will serve notice to Jaleel for the interrogation.
Meanwhile, the ED probe team examined the minister’s statement in detail. The officials wanted to know whether Jaleel is involved in any dealings with UAE consulate apart from a minister's role.
Some packets in the diplomatic baggage from UAE consulate were taken to the office of C-APT under higher education department as directed by Jaleel. Meanwhile, the minister claimed that the packets taken to two institutes in the vehicle of C-APT carried religious texts. Customs (preventive) wing had carried out a detailed examination of this baggage. But customs raised suspicion over the weight of the baggage.
The customs officials will record Jaleel’s statement on the diplomatic baggage as per section 108 in customs act. So, he will not be able to change his statement later. This statement will have a value of evidence before the court.
It is reported that ED recorded the statement of Jaleel and Bineesh Kodiyeri in this manner.
After analyzing Jaleel’s statement, ED examined that his links with UAE consulate are more than official. Protocols were violated and permission from central and the state government was not sought in some matters with the consulate, observed ED.
