Kalpetta: Kerala government disbursed the compensation to the farmers whose pigs were culled in Kannur and Wayanad after African Swine Fever was reported in these districts.

It is learnt that 50 per cent of the compensation had to be borne by the Centre and the remaining by the state. However, without delaying the distribution of compensation, the required amount has been raised from the corpus fund of the Animal Disease Control Programme of the Animal Husbandry department. The amount will be recouped into the fund when the central government grants its share of compensation.

The state government had granted Rs 37,17,751 for seven farmers in Wayanad and Rs 15,15,600 for two farmers in Kannur district.

In Kalpetta, the distribution of compensation was held under Sulthan Bathery MLA AC Balakrishnan. Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi attended the programme online.

Kadannapally Ramachandran MLA presided over the programme in Kannur. Mayor Adv TO Mohanan and district panchayat president PP Divya also participated in the event.
