Actress attack case: Special court judge seeks more time to complete trial
New Delhi: The Special Court judge which is investigating the actress attack case in which actor Dileep is named accused, has approached the Supreme Court requesting six more months to compete the trial.
The special trial court judge Honey M Varghese informed the court that the trial could not be completed within the time limit fixed by the apex court due to COVID lockdown and related issues. Hence, the judge requested more time for completion of the trial. A three-member bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar will consider the request on Tuesday.
A bench consisting of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari had directed on November 29, 2019 that the trial of the case should be completed within six months. According to this, the trial was supposed to be completed by May 29. However, the final hearing was delayed as some petitions related to the case was under consideration of the high court.
Meanwhile, Additional Session Court judge Honey M Varghese forwarded a letter to the high court on April 30 stating that the trial proceedings cannot be completed by May 29. The registrar of the high court handed over the letter to the apex court on May 11.
The Additional Sessions judge has made it clear that daily activities of the court was affected during the COVID lockdown. Considering this situation, the judge requested the top court to extend the time limit to six more months to finish the trial.
If the Supreme Court accedes to the request, then the time limit will be extended till November this year. Currently, the cross examination of the actress is progressing in the court. The actress has already been examined by the prosecution and only the re-examination is pending.
