Tirur: An accused in a POCSO case tried to commit suicide after hearing the verdict by jumping from the court building. Kottakkal native Abdul Jabbar (27) jumped from the first floor of the Tirur fast-track special POCSO court. Police took him to the district hospital.

Jabbar was sentenced to 18 years in prison. He is accused in a case registered by the Kottakkal police for raping a Class 10 girl and threatening her using photos he captured on his mobile phone in 2014.

He was presented in court at 2 pm on Saturday. Judge CR Dinesh sentenced him to 18 years of rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 65,000. The accused jumped out of the building immediately after the judge pronounced the verdict.

According to the police, Jabbar, who was injured, tried to escape. People in the court premises tried to stop him. He hit his head on the wall of the old sub-registrar office and expressed uneasiness. Police then captured him and admitted him to the hospital. Police have registered a case against him for trying to escape.
