2 killed as lorry plunges into gorge on NH in Idukki

Remains of the lorry met with accident near Valara waterfalls

Kochi: Two men were killed in an accident when a Torus lorry plunged into the Deviyar river on the Kochi- Dhanushkodi National Highway on Monday night. Injapara native Siju, driver of the lorry, and cleaner Santhosh from Kothamangalam were the deceased.

The lorry plunged 300 feet deep near Valara waterfalls and the cabin was completely crushed in the impact of the fall. The accident happened when the lorry gave way to a bus while returning after unloading metal stone in the high range. The lorry rolled down several times before plunging into the river at the foot of the gorge.

The rescue attempts was delayed as it was dark and it was a forest region. The dead were pulled out from the lorry only by 3 am on Tuesday.
