Kannur: CPM has placed all cards on the deck as it hosts the 23rd Party Congress in Kannur. The splendorous event has turned the district into an epic centre of communism in India. The cutouts, posters of contemporary leaders and those from history adorn the walls and streets of Kannur. Interestingly, the face of veteran leader and former Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan is missing from the scene. VS Achuthanandan, one of the leading figures of communism, will not be attending the event due to age-related ailments.

It is worth noting that he was honoured during the 2018 Hyderabad party congress. However, the party members were surprised to see that he was missing from the 23rd party congress held in the state. The omission of VS is feared to be a move from the party to distance itselves from the stand taken by the former Chief Minister on various matters.

It is worth noting that VS is one of the two living party members who walked out against the CPI's revisionist ideas on April 11, 1964.

He is one of the 32 people who walked out of the CPI National Committee. CPM leader Sankaraiah, who left the committee with VS on that day, is highly regarded by the party in Tamil Nadu.

Earlier, the leaders had come up with an explanation on the omission of VS image from the CPM state conference in Kochi. The leadership said it had decided to put pictures only of late leaders and those attending the function.
