Abhirami's parents raise serious allegations against doctors at Pathanamthitta General Hospital

Pathanamthitta: Parents of Abhirami, the girl who died of rabies infection following a stray dog attack, raised serious allegations against the doctors of Pathanamthitta General Hospital for negligence of duty. They said that their daughter would have been alive if the hospital officials had given proper care. “Nobody is going to file any complaint. If a complaint is filed, a post-mortem will be required. That is unimaginable for us. The authorities concerned are aware of what had happened. We want to ensure that nobody else has to go through this in future,” said Abhiram’s parents Hareesh and Rajani.

The family health centre in Perinad was closed when Abhirami’s parents took her there. Soon, they rushed her to the General Hospital in Pathanamthitta. Upon arriving at the hospital, the doctor instructed them to wash the wounds with soap first. The parents themselves had to clean the wound after buying soap. “We had no problem in cleaning the wound. The only concern was that we didn’t know how to do it the right way. Then they asked us to get a Covid test done. By the time we got the result of the test and administration of anti-rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin was complete, an hour had already passed.”

However, the hospital authorities informed that necessary precautions were administered in the initial four hours after the bite and that they did all they could. There was a major injury near her eyes and Rajani questioned why the doctors didn’t give necessary instructions or refer Abhirami to another hospital if there was a chance of infection. By the time Abhirami was admitted to the children’s hospital in Kottayam Government Medical College when her health condition deteriorated, the virus had critically infected her brain. Rajani said that her daughter was treated well at the medical college hospital.

Opposition leader VD Satheesan, BJP State President K Surendran, Anto Antony MP, CPM Central Committee member Thomas Issac and former MLA Raju Abraham visited Abhirami’s house and expressed their condolences.
