Abhaya case: Fr Jose Poothrikkayil acquitted from case
Thiruvananthapuram: Delivering its judgement in the discharge petitions of the 3 main accused in the sensational Sister Abhaya murder case, the special CBI court here on Wednesday acquitted Fr Jose Poothrikkayil from the case.
However, the discharge petitions of Fr Thomas M Kottoor and Sister Sefi were dismissed. Hearing the pleas, the court upheld the argument that there is no evidence against Poothrikkayil in the case.
Fr Kottoor and Sr Sefi will have to face trial.
The CBI has charged the trio with murder, destruction of evidence and other offences. The three accused claimed the charges against them are fabricated.
The case pertains to alleged murder of Sr Abhaya, who was an inmate of Pius X convent in Kottayam. She was found dead in the well of the convent on March 27, 1992.
The crime branch and CBI teams which initially probed the case had concluded that it was a case of suicide.
