Thrissur: Puzhakkal in Thrissur witnessed a tragic accident on January 25, 1974. A private bus that overturned into waterlogged farmland at a depth of 18 feet claimed the lives of 10 individuals. Though bus driver Janardhanan was able to rescue many he was then sentenced to one year for the accident. He also served another eight months due to non-payment of a fine slapped.

Among the survivors of the accident was an eight-month-old boy named Sukumaran, who lost three siblings in the incident. His mother too was seriously injured but returned to normal life later. Interestingly, it was Janardhanan who rescued Sukumaran and the media then referred to the latter as the ‘miracle boy’.

Sukumaran(R) and Janardhanan(L)

Recently, Sukumaran met Janardhanan after nearly 50 years of the bus tragedy. At first, Janardhanan was not able to recognise him. But after talking he remembered the episode.

Both had a warm interaction and they spend time together. Sukumaran is now 49, while Janardhanan is 75. The former is a driving instructor while the latter is now running an ayurvedic medicine shop.
