Thrissur: An 82-year-old woman has been struggling for the past 12 years demanding patta for her 15 cent land. Bharathiyamma is currently residing in a rented house at Choolissery in Thrissur, still hoping to build a house if any official hands over the patta.

Orayampurathu Bharathiyamma had submitted a request for patta for her 15 cents of land in Thanikkudam at the Village office on August 27, 2010. Following this, she received no objection certificate from panchayat secretary on June 26, 2012, Irrigation department on August 13 and Village office on August 22. The authorities informed that the two cents of adjacent land can also be bought by paying fair value of land when the legal proceedings for patta reached its final stage. Accordingly, Bharathiyamma’s son O Devendran filed another request for this. The documents claim that she has been possessing the land for 44 years.

In a petition filed to the then chief minister Oommen Chandy during his mass contact programme, Bharathiyamma accused the intermediaries for the delay in obtaining patta. Though the CM ordered immediate action over Bharathiyamma’s petition on December 19, 2013, it has not been implemented yet.

Besides this, Bharathiyamma’s 22 cents of land was confiscated by a chit fund company based in Chennai. She had joined the chit fund inorder to help an acquaintance. Even after the confiscation, the company has not changed the ownership details in the documents in the village office. Hence, the patta of 15 cents of land has been withheld by pointing out the ownership details of the confiscated 22 cents of land.
