6000 kg of contaminated fish seized in Vadakara

Kozhikode: Authorities of Food Safety Department seized 6000 Kg of fish contaminated with toxic chemical formalin in Vadakara. The fish was brought from Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu.

The fish was earlier taken to Kannur from Kozhikode market., As the fish was stale, it was not accepted at Kannur. While it was being taken back to Kozhikode, the vehicle broke down at Kottakkadavu in Vadakara. As bad smell started emanating from the vehicle, officials of the Motor Vehicles Department conducted an inspection and found the stale fish.

Subsequently, the Food Safety Department conducted an inspection and clarified that the fish was contaminated with formalin.

The Food Safety Department officials said that the details of other chemicals in the fish can only be ascertained after conducting more tests.

Such a large amount of fish has been seized amid the Food Safety Department conducting state-wide inspections to seize stale fish.
