6 berths to be reserved for solo women rail passengers
Kochi: The Southern Railway has decided to reserve seats to women passengers who travel alone in trains. Six berths will be reserved in every sleeper compartments and three berths in third AC and second AC compartments each.
The benefits will be available for women-only travelers group also. The Railway Ministry has directed that there should not be any male passengers in the PNR (Passenger Name Record) number while booking berths. If six berths could not be allowed for women for any reason, women in the waiting list will be given priority while preparing the final list.
A woman travelling alone shall be given priority irrespective of her position in the Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) list. The second priority is for senior citizens.
The Railway Ministry gave the direction to the Southern Railway considering the fact that the number of women travelers who travel alone is higher in the south Indian states compared to other places. Divisional Railway Manager Prakash said that women can travel comfortably when they are provided special berths in all compartments.
