Malappuram: In a major haul by customs, 5kg of gold was seized from the luggage of a passenger at Karipur airport. The passenger was apparently helped by two Indigo staffers. Though the passenger fled the airport, the officials arrested the two staffers. The approximate value of gold seized is Rs 2.5 crore.
The gold in compound form was seized from Wayanad native Ashkar Ali who arrived from Dubai. He reportedly concealed it in the secret pockets of clothes kept in the suitcase.
To avoid customs scrutiny, the man was helped by ramp supervisor Sajid Rahman and customer service agent Muhammad Zamil. They had allegedly put domestic tag to the case instead of international tag. They also agreed to get the luggage out of the flight.
According to reports, when Ashkar came to know that the staffers were nabbed, he fled the scene. The officials said that the staffers were involved in helping the smuggler.
Recently, a superintendent of the customs department was arrested for clearing way for the carriers who smuggled gold via the airport. As as result, the arrest of Indigo staffers puts forth many questions about a possible clout in the airport.
