503 restaurants in Kerala get hygiene certificate, more to follow

Kannur: As many as 503 restaurants and eateries in Kerala received the hygiene certificate from the food safety department. The initiative is based on the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India's star rating scheme. The cleanliness and quality were considered for the certification.

The certificate is valid for two years. It has to be renewed later. The shops which did not get the rating can improve their quality and apply again.

Malappuram, with 66 restaurants, topped the list. Thiruvananthapuram has only five and is at the bottom.

Food safety commissioner opined that the initiative will create an atmosphere of healthy competition among the restaurants.

The food safety department had earlier said that a mobile app to view the hygiene status of the restaurants will be launched soon.
