Kottayam: The Lorry Owners Welfare Association in the state are looking out for drivers for their vehicles.
As of now, the association has 10 lakh goods vehicles across the country. 8 lakh vehicles is in Kerala itself. There are 50,000 driver vacancies under the heavy vehicle category in the state. Similarly, in 25,000 goods vehicles, there are no permanent employees.
It may be noted that even one such vehicle can offer employment to two drivers and one aide.
As a first step, the association will give training to 100 individuals. They will train others. In two years 10,000 individuals will complete training. The plan is to make 50,000 drivers part of the network in the coming years.
The association wants more women in driver’s seats. According to them, they are better at abiding to rules and are not prone to issues like substance abuse.
