44,200 tonnes of black sand removed from Thottappally in 40 days
Ambalappuzha: As per the official records, 44,200 tonnes of black sand was mined from Thottappally spillway within the last 40 days. A total of 3400 loads of black sand was taken from here till Monday evening. However, the Action Council alleged that the actual figures are over ten times of this.
More than 100 lorries carry black sand from here every day. The construction of the groove on sandbank is completed even after 40 days. The casuarina trees were chopped down in order to make the groove in the same width of spillway. However, the groove of even one third of its width is not formed yet.
The relay protest conducted by the Action Council against black sand mining in Thottappally completed one month. The protesters will conduct a blockade protest at the collectorate on July 2. The District Solidarity Committee also will take part in it. The Action Council will block the black sand lorries by forming a people's barricade at Thottappally.
