35 pc medical issues caused by side effects of medicines
Alappuzha: According to Dr. B Suresh, President of the Indian Pharmacy council, 35 percent of the medical issues in the country are caused due to medical side effects. He also said this has led to an increase in the number of in-patients in hospitals.
According to the pharmacy council, the problem can be resolved only if the country promotes clinical pharmacists. At present the responsibility of the pharmacist is restricted to dispensing medicines prescribed by the Doctors.
The Pharmacy Council has been stressing on a new work culture where the right patient must get the right medicine at the right time in the appropriate quantity.
The directions given by the Prime Minister to ensure promotion of generic medicines is a positive step in this regard. The pharmacy council is also mooting a plan to open Janoushadhis at all the Pharmacy colleges in the country. This will aid in giving practical training to the students and improve access to affordable medicines.
More number of Pharm D courses are also being conducted. Training will be imparted to existing pharmacists to enable an upgradation of their role to observing a medicine right from the production stage to its action in the human body.
