33,000 words; Glossary of Malayalam technical terms gets ready
Mysore: National Translation Mission under Central Institute of Indian Languages here has prepared a glossary of Malayalam technical terms. Over 33000 technical terms are included in the glossary.
Though the glossary was prepared, none have paid any attention to it. There were also complaints that no Malayalam technical terms exists to prepare PSC exam paper in Malayalam.
The glossary of Malayalam technical terms includes the words which can be used to replace English words.
“The glossary was prepared as part of the translation of English non-fiction books to Malayalam,” said the officials in-charge of the translation mission to Mathrubhumi.
12,000 terms related to politics, 9000 terms from philosophy and 6000 terms each from history and botany are included in the final draft of the glossary of Malayalam technical terms.
At the same time, over 10,000 terms of botany should be prepared. Apart from this, glossary of Malayalam technical terms from mathematics, anthropology, sociology, engineering, chemistry, public administration and education are also being prepared.
50,000 English technical terms related to different subjects are listed to be translated into Malayalam.
The National Translation Mission aims to translate English non-fiction books to 22 Indian languages including Malayalam. As part of this, the officials are trying to find equivalent Malayalam technical terms for each English term.
The glossary in each subject will be used to translate books on the particular subject. The National Translation Mission will direct to use these terms for all translation works to have a standardised form.
At the same time, many Malayalam technical terms are newly formed. Some terms had a small change from its previous form.
