Adoor: Adoor native Kunjupenn is a woman of unwavering willpower. She started her line of work 30 years back to make ends meet. Want to know what she does? She digs wells and she keeps doing it even at the age of 75! She has dug more than 1,000 wells so far. She started this line of work with the end of her marriage when her son Kishor was just one year old. She was doing odd jobs at first.
Once, she noticed few people digging a well in her neighbouring house. She was laughed at when she told them she wished to join them. She also remembers being told that women are not allowed to be around while digging wells. When the workers left, she went there and observed the work they had done. She also inspected the tools that they had left behind.
She dug her first well at the house of a vicar and then started digging wells in and around Adoor and even in districts outside Pathanamthitta. She says that she has dug a well at the depth of 70 feet and with 38 rings.
Her son Kishor who is an auto driver sometimes helps her in the work. She also knows how to spot the ideal location for digging wells. Kunjupenn is perfectly fit even at the age of 75.
