Thiruvananthapuram: Gold worth Rs 8 crore was seized from the Thiruvananthapuram international airport on Monday morning. The smuggled gold weighs 25 kgs and Tirumala native Sunil was arrested in connection with the incident. Sunil is being interrogated by the customs officials. Two more persons who flew in from Oman are also being quizzed in connection with the seizure.
Gold was found packed in a bag in the form of biscuits.
It is suspected that the smugglers received the assistance of airport staff. Earlier, there were many incidents reported at Thiruvananthapuram airport that had assistance of airport staff. And in some cases, airport staff themselves were arrested. Reports say airport staff had smuggled nearly 100 kg gold in the last six months.
Thiruvananthapuram has turned as a key centre for gold smuggling from Dubai.
