21 lakh households to get drinking water connection this year: CM
Thiruvananthapuram: A total of 21 lakh households in the state will get drinking water connection through Jal Jeevan Mission this year, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said during the press conference after COVID review meeting here on Thursday.
The project will be implemented jointly by the state and central governments. There are 67,40,000 rural houses in the state and 18,30,000 among them have drinking water connection. Jal Jeevan Mission intends to provide drinking water connection to the remaining 49,11,000 houses by 2024, he added.
With the mission, a long term drinking water project for the houses in village areas will be implemented in panchayat level. The gram panchayat and the concerned standing committee will be supervising the project. MLA fund can be spent for the project in LIFE Mission model, he said.
All panchayats should come forward to fulfill the aim of giving water connection to all villages in the state. 332 panchayat committees have taken decision on the project so far. With the implementation of the project, the drinking water crisis in rural area will be resolved, the chief minister said.
