20 tourists fell into backwaters after boat jetty collapses in Kochi


Mattancherry: Twenty tourists fell into the backwaters in Kochi after a section of the terminal boat jetty in Wellington Island collapsed on Friday. The tourists were rescued by the crew aboard a state water transport boat anchored near the jetty. All escaped with minor injuries.

The incident took place around 2 pm on Friday. Those who came to see Kochi from Andhra Pradesh met with the accident. The bridge over the jetty collapsed while the passengers were waiting for the arrival of their boat. The state boat, which was scheduled to depart at 2.40 pm, was anchored near. The catastrophe was averted due to the timely intervention of this boat crew.

The jetty comes under the State Department of Water Transport. The passengers and locals said that no repairs were made for some time in the area. Passengers repeatedly complained that the jetty was dilapidated.
