20 percent of people who test COVID -ve develop 'Long Covid'
Kochi: Studies have shown that even if COVID-19 patients have tested negative, the symptoms prevail for a long time in 20 percent of them.
The health experts point out that the symptoms can last from 3 weeks to 6 months and this is called 'Long COVID', because the symptoms of COVID continue. This is an observation of the doctors who treated the patients in the state.
About 90 percent of the patients suffered severe exhaustion. Though they feel that they are fully cured on some days, they will again be affected with exhaustion in a few days.
Long COVID is mostly observed in women, elderly people and those with other critical diseases. Those who have symptoms like intense cough, breathing trouble and hoarseness within the first 5 days of infecting with COVID are more likely to develop Long COVID, said IMA state vice president Dr N Sulfi.
There are a group of people in the society who need not be subjected to the COVID test as they have zero symptoms. They might have infected with the virus and they also may develop Long COVID in future.
Even if the patient tests negative, the government should initiate a system to check them at regular intervals. This will help to find out the physical ailments occurring due to the COVID infection, Dr Sulfi said.
