Kochi: Two and a half kilogram of gold that was smuggled in the interior of a butchering tool was caught at Nedumbassery airport. The gold was recovered by the Customs officers from inside the tool imported from abroad and addressed to a location in Thrikkakara in Kochi.
The tool arrived at the Air Cargo Complex at Nedumbassery addressed to Sirajudheen, the owner of Thuruthel Enterprise in Thrikkakara. The gold was found after the Customs officers inspected the tool on suspicion. The tool was forced open using a gas cutting torch.
The Customs department has taken Sirajudheen’s driver, who came to collect the tool, into custody. The officers have started search for Sirajudheen.
The officials are also dubious about the working of Sirajudheen’s company, Thuruthel Enterprise. It is doubted whether the tool that is available in Kerala for about Rs 40,000 was imported from abroad to smuggle gold. The Customs department has started investigating whether they have smuggled gold in similar way before as well.
