166 kilo gold smuggled; conspiracy hatched through TG; chat history comes out
Kochi: The conspiracy hatched by the accused in the gold smuggling activities through Thiruvananthapuram airport has come out. The Customs which issued the show cause notice to the accused Sarith, Sandeep and Rameez also mentions about the Telegram chats they had sent.
Only a part of the Telegram chats that were exchanged between the accused Sandeep, Rameez and Sarith was mentioned in the show cause notice. The Telegram group was named CPM committee.
The first chat in Telegram was done on December 1, 2019. The chat mentions about 50 kg of gold being transported and how it has to be dealt within the airport. The chat also talks about the vehicle, namely a Land Cruiser or Innova, to easily transport the smuggled gold outside. Sarith also mentions in the chat that the cargo arriving in Thiruvananthapuram must be clearly marked as diplomatic baggage.
The chat also talks about the name change in the diplomatic baggage, how to possess the baggage and how to shift the baggage out of the airport by Sarith. Besides chat history, the voice messages too were added in the show cause notice.
Consul General, Attache helped smuggle 166 kilo
The UAE consul general and the Attache have also aided in the smuggling of gold and these facts have been shown in the show cause notice. The Consulate General Jamal Hussain al-Sabi had helped smuggle 95 kg of gold in 5 months’ time and Attache Rashid Khamis Ali had tried to smuggle 71 kilo of gold within 2 months. They had also given a copy of Sarith’s passport and visa in order to smuggle gold.
The plastic logo of the UAE consulate to be marked in the documents to bring the consignment was also exchanged. The Consul General was aware that Sarith was impersonating his signature.
Jamal Hussain had got US $ 1000 for each transaction. He had also assured that his name must not come out in case of any failure in operation and also promised a job at the UAE consulate. All this was mentioned in the show cause notice.
Gold was smuggled between November 15, 2019 and March 4, 2020 through the diplomatic baggage route 18 times from UAE consulate to Kerala.
