13 candidates in Pala bypoll; Jose Tom gets ‘pineapple’ symbol
Pala: As the deadline to withdraw the nominations ended on Saturday, 13 contestants will come face to face in Pala bypoll. United Democratic Front (UDF) supported independent candidate Jose Tom will contest in the ‘pineapple’ symbol.
Earlier, attempts were made by Kerala Congress (M) to get ‘autorickshaw’ symbol for the bypoll. Apart from Jose Tom, two more candidates had demanded the ‘autorickshaw’ symbol. As ‘autorickshaw’ symbol was not available, UDF demanded ‘Pineapple’ symbol.
In the voting machine, Mani C Kappan is listed first while Jose Tom is placed seventh.
Earlier, the electoral officer had rejected Jose Tom’s nomination as the Kerala Congress (M) candidate and accepted his nomination as an independent candidate. Jose to will now have to choose from three symbols: Pineapple, Autorickshaw and Football.
During the scrutiny of nomination papers for the Pala bypoll P.J. Joseph and Jose K. Mani groups of Kerala Congress (M) were involved in heated arguments over granting the two leaves symbol earlier.
While Jose K. Mani group demanded to grant the two leaves symbol to UDF candidate Jose Tom, P. J. Joseph group strongly opposed it.
With both groups refusing to budge, the election officer cited the Thodupuzha Munsiff Court’s order staying the election in which Jose K. Mani was named the chairman of Kerala Congress (M).
