Kochi: Senior CPM leader and former minister G Sudhakaran wrote a letter informing his intent to step down from the CPM state committee. Meantime, Sudhakaran told media that he had not told anyone about the letter and that it was up to the party to take the final decision.

According to the central committee, the age limit for membership in the State Committee should be below 75 years. However, 12 state committee members are above this age limit. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, as the senior leader of the party and the government will get an exemption from this rule.

As per the official records, G Sudhakaran is 76 years old. But he points out that there was an error in the date of birth. However, it is reported that he visited CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan in Thiruvanathapuram and submitted a letter stating his intent to step down from his role.

It is learnt that Kodiyeri has clarified that no decision was taken, and the matter will be discussed only at the state conference.
