118 COVID-19 cases in Kerala on Sunday; 42 recoveries

14 people have contracted the disease through contact. It is for the 10th consecutive day that Kerala is recording over 100 new coronavirus cases.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has recorded 118 new COVID cases within 24 hours on Sunday, Health Minister K. K. Shailaja informed through an official press release. 42 people have recovered from the disease in the state. 14 people have contracted the disease through contact.

It is for the 10th consecutive day that Kerala is recording over 100 new coronavirus cases.

Out of the total number of positive cases, Kannur has the highest with 26 followed by Thrissur with 17. There are 10 new cases each in Kollam and Alappuzha, 9 in Thiruvananthapuram, 7 each in Ernakulam and Kozhikode, 6 in Kasaragod, 5 each in Kottayam, Malappuram and Wayanad, 4 each in Idukki and Palakkad and 3 in Pathanamthitta.

Out of the 118 cases, 68 came from abroad and 36 people came from other states. Among the people who returned from abroad, 19 are from Kuwait, 15 from UAE, 12 from Oman, 10 from Saudi Arabia, 4 each from Qatar and Bahrain, 2 from Nigeria and 1 from Ghana.

Out of the 36 who came from other states, 10 are from Karnataka, 7 each from Delhi and Maharashtra, 5 from Tamil Nadu, 2 each from Telangana and Chhattisgarh and 1 each from Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

14 persons contracted the virus through contact. Among them 5 are staff of a private hospital in Malappuram, 4 are from Kottayam while 1 each are from Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Kannur and Palakkad districts.

Out of the 42 patients who recovered from the disease, Kozhikode district recorded the highest with 7 cases (including 1 Palakkad natives). 6 people recovered from the virus in Idukki, 5 each from Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur and Kasaragod, 3 from Palakkad, 2 from Pathanamthitta and 1 each from Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam (Kottayam native), Wayanad and Kannur districts.

With this, there are 2,015 active COVID cases in the state at present. It is for the first time that Kerala has reported over 2,000 active coronavirus cases. Meanwhile, 2,150 people have recovered from the virus so far.

Currently 1,75,734 people are under observation in the state. Among them, 1,73,123 people are under home/institutional quarantine while 2,611 are in hospitals. 335 people were admitted to hospitals on Sunday.

5,406 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. A total of 2,20,821 samples were sent for testing including routine, augmented, sentinel, pooled sentinel, CB NAT and TrueNat samples. The results of 4,041 samples are awaited. Also, 45,592 samples were collected as part of sentinel survey among frontline workers. Out of this, 43,842 cases tested negative.
